President’s Message 2008

In a year where many significant changes have occurred, the Democratic Labour Party regaining governmental control in Barbados after 15 years and an African American attaining the highest office in the United States of America, it is good to see that the democratic process is alive and well.

Change is the watchword which has mobilized people to act with purpose. Our communities have changed by adapting to the pressures from an economy in flux and fossil fuel prices which stood at record levels just a few short months ago.

Some of us accept change readily, some resist it. However, change is necessary and inevitable.

The role of the Barbados Association of Greater Houston has changed since the organization’s birth seventeen years ago. Our mission has been extended far beyond that of socializing, to become one of a catalyst in forging a strong community by building relationships and working toward common goals.

I am very pleased to be a part of BAGH, and want to assure you that we will continue to do what matters, to improve our position in this community. On behalf of the officers and members of the BAGH, I want to say thank you for your commitment and generous support to our cause.

Past President 2007 - Dr. J. Sylvester Thompson

President’s Message  2007

“It is more blessed to give than to receive.”  This statement embodies a position to which we all aspire.  Giving fills us with a feeling that most find hard to verbalize; but once we do it wholeheartedly, it is a feeling that produces an outward glow.

This year, we have been blessed with one giving family who has enabled BAGH to provide a record number of scholarships.  It is generous folks like the Walkes who enable organizations such as ours to have the where with all to continue our mission of support for the youth of this community.

As we all recognize, our youth is the backbone of future existence.  To continue to provide not just scholarships or activities, to promote cultural enhancement, we need more eager givers.  Every one of us should be enthusiastic with this responsibility.  We must all continue to give of our time, talent, and treasure as one of our recent dearly departed members, Cyrilene Corbin has demonstrated throughout her rich association with BAGH.

So, in celebration of our 41st year of Independence, let us dedicate ourselves to become more cheerful givers.

J. Sylvester Thompson
